Nuno Gomes is a former Portuguese football player (played as a striker). Unlike the name of most footballers, his is a nickname given to him during childhood after Fernando Gomes, a famous footballer and recipient of about 50 caps for Portugal.

Nuno Gomes is one of the most popular offensive players between the 1990s and 2000s, scoring consistently for both his native country and the club. He spent most of his football career playing for Benfica, netting 166 goals in 398 games throughout 12 seasons. Gomes also played for Boavista, Fiorentina, Braga and Blackburn Rovers. His career total appearance count is 609 and goals scored count is 227.

Gomes was born in Amarante, making his debut in the Primeira in the 94/95 season at the age of 18. He won his first Taça de Portugal in 1997, contributing a goal to the 3-2 winning score in the final against Benfica. Following his hugely successful two seasons, with 79 games played and 23 goals scored, the Portuguese was transferred to Benfica. Before that he ranked joint-forth top scorer in his last year with Boavista.

Following three seasons at Benfica, Gomes scored more than 60 goals during 100 appearances, a success that resulted in a 17 mln. € transfer to Fiorentina. He later returned to Benfica following two seasons with Fiorentina, helping the club win the domestic cup in 2003/04, as well as the league in the next season, despite a series of injuries. His finest season was probably 2005/06, with 15 goals scored in the league, which included a hat trick against U.D. Leiria.

Gomes represented his native country in a total of two world cups and three European championships, contributing to the team winning silver during Euro 2004 and bronze in Euro 2000. He won 79 senior caps total.

Gomes was quoted saying hard work and self-belief are crucial for a striker, as even though your career may be going well, there are times you may be losing confidence.
